MAS Basic Observer & Advanced Course

OPGA is hosting a MAS Basic Observer & Advanced Course to be held at Northwestern University P&O Center (NUPOC) in Chicago, IL on October 24-25, 2008. Attendees may attend both sessions or pick just one. Please note that in order to attend the advanced course, you must either attend this Basic Observer & Advanced Course course or have attended a prior MAS course.

The Basic Observer & Advanced Course course is designed to give a basic overview of the course with Marlo casting and fitting a patient model.

The advanced course is geared for the experienced practitioner who is already having good success with basic transfemoral MAS fittings and is ready to advance to the next level of clinical expertise.

A major emphasis will be on a systematic approach to troubleshooting of MAS transfemoral sockets, both at the initial fitting and during follow-up visits.

Another important segment of the seminar will be Marlo’s step-by-step presentation of how his MAS transfemoral fitting principles can be applied to hip disarticulation amputation to provide the patient with a hemi-socket offering an unparalleled level of comfort, control, and gait efficiency.

Marlo will also discuss how to approach difficult fittings and special cases, with an extensive series of case vignettes showing how to handle very short femoral remnants, bilateral cases, severe scarring, and how to successfully convert previous quadrilateral socket wearers to the MAS socket. In many instances, the patients themselves will be present to comment on their long-term experience with their prostheses and to answer attendee questions.

The M.A.S.® socket design is an evolution--and perhaps even a "revolution"--in the development of ischial containment (IC) socket concepts.  Since 1999, when Marlo Ortiz Vazuez del Mercado, Ortiz Internacional, Jalisco, Mexico, first unveiled his new design, it has continued to arouse interest throughout the O&P worldwide community.

In 2004, the design was featured in the Thranhardt lecture series during the American Academy of Orthotists & Prosthetists 2004 Annual Meeting and Scientific Symposium. More recently Marlo was awarded the Clinical Creativity award from the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists for his work with transfemoral socket design.
